In May 2008 the Rail Development Officer organised a trip out to the Isle of Wight Steam railway at Havenstreet for a group of 38 children from Sandown Church of England Primary School and the Inclusion Unit from Sandown High School.
This was after the young people had worked successfully together for the ‘On Track’ sculpture project, showing the past, present and future of rail.
The weather for once held out and it was a lovely sunny day which enabled the children to enjoy a picnic and play outside, finishing up with a DVD and a tour of the workshops from the railway volunteers.
The picnic and play was particularly beneficial for some of the older children from the unit, as relaxing and being children enjoying the innocent pleasures of tag and British bull dog is something long since, if ever experienced.
