TravelSafe Groups
Vision StatementTravelSafe Groups in Schools hope to encourage a partnership approach in working with the relevant organisations but driven by Middle and High School pupils to inspire ownership and project longevity to successfully improve and encourage travelling on the Islands transport Network, thus reducing our carbon footprint in order to protect our future.
To date TravelSafe has been set up and is running within 6 schools. The young people of Sandown initially designed the first TravelSafe poster that went out to all schools before Christmas 2007, which is displayed on the transport vehicles, ferries and trains to promote safe, responsible travel whilst encouraging more young people to use public transport to access school and to leisure facilities. This same group, who from the TravelSafe poster project have now launched their own design Company ‘Wight Sky’ are now busy designing the credit card pull out for TravelSafe fto go to all children at middle and high schools on the Isle of Wight, soon to be replicated in the New Forest.
The young people of Carisbrooke, Christ the King College and the Isle of Wight College have successfully worked together to produce a TravelSafe questionnaire that is applicable to all the Islands public transport providers and has produced some interesting results, evaluated and disseminated to the group by the Hampshire Constabulary. This year they are working on a DVD, which will be available in July 2009. Please see TravelSafe DVD to follow the project.
A TravelSafe pack has been put together to enable other schools to form groups to follow the generic Island TravelSafe groups set up and ethos.
It includes;

Sandown High in partnership with Lake and Sandham Middle School has now set up their own TravelSafe Group and has started with a bang!
Friday 6th March saw young people, the CRP and Transport Managers including Southern Vectis and Island Line met in the morning to be updated on Carisbrooke TravelSafe and to discuss ways forward for the group.
First and foremost it was important to have the group appoint a chair, which I have to say was done at great speed, the chair being nominated, seconded and voted unanimously as Michael Shuttleworth, year 11 Sandown High, 11 seconds start to finish, which is some going! Rosie and Tash, again both year 11 students were voted as secretariat, again unanimously taking this time a drawn out 15 seconds!
After the initial speed, things slowed down somewhat with Bobby explaining the questionnaire and the DVD project which will be undertaken this year by Carisbrooke. However when the young people returned from their break, prior to which Bobby asked them to think about projects for their own group to support the TravelSafe ethos, they sat down re-energised and full of ideas. Bobby asked the group to go round the table for their ideas; including adults and we were away. They included the following;
The remainder of the meeting had great energy and we all felt that the group were incredibly positive with ideas that can be put in place ASAP.

The next meeting will be in May, date TBC.
19th May

Young people from the Partnership met to further discuss projects to come from Sandown TravelSafe Partnership. Sandham Middle sent apologies as they had an inset day and Lake didn’t respond to the invite which clearly needs to be addressed.
The group were as last time inspired with their ideas and genuine excitement for the projects they were coming up with which include the following;
· Open meeting were they intend to give a presentation of TravelSafe and the collective objects
· Show the DVD from Carisbrooke TravelSafe Partnership
· Set up a TravelSafe Facebook
· Update the questionnaire
· Look at a advertising campaign in the new school year to be run at cinemas
The next meeting to start to look at their presentation is on June 16th which hopefully will include our other TravelSafe Partners, the Police and transport managers.
